Prefer et rather
PREFER
Pour dire ce que l'on préfère en général :
I never watch TV. I prefer to read/I prefer reading. = Je ne regarde jamais la TV. Je préfère lire.
Préférer une chose à une autre :
I prefer tea to coffee. = Je préfère le thé au café.
Préférer faire quelque chose plutôt que quelque chose d'autre :
They prefer sunbathing to visiting places of interest. = Ils préfèrent bronzer que de visiter des endroits intéressants.
Notez aussi... prefer to do something rather than (do) something else :
I prefer to walk rather than take the bus. = Je préfère marcher plutôt que prendre l'autobus.
They prefer to sunbathe rather than visit places of interest. = Ils préfèrent bronzer plutôt que visiter des endroits intéressants.
We prefer to live in a house rather than (live in) a flat. = Nous préférons vivre dans une maison plutôt que (vivre dans) un appartement.
Notez qu'avec -'d on n’emploie pas la forme en -ing :
Let's go to Cornwall! - l'd prefer to go to Venice. = Allons en Cornouailles ! - Je préfère aller à Venise.
I’d prefer to visit the Eden Project rather than Tintagel Castel. = J'aurais préféré visiter le Projet Eden plutôt que le château de Tintagel.
Pareil dans le négatif :
I’d prefer not to go to the castle today. = J'aurais préféré ne pas aller au château aujourd'hui.
RATHER
On peut aussi remplacer would prefer to do par would rather do :
Let's go to Cornwall! - I’d prefer to go/I’d rather go to Venice! = Allons en Cornouailles ! - J'aurais préféré aller/je préfèrerais aller à Venise !
À la forme négative, I’d rather devient I’d rather not :
I’d rather not go back to Cornwall on holiday this year. = Je n'étais pas revenu en vacances en Cornouailles cette année.
Why don’t you come surfing with me? - I'd rather not. = Pourquoi est-ce que ne tu ne viens pas surfer avec moi ? - Je n'y tiens pas.
Si l'on emploie rather + un verbe avec un pronom (par exemple I’d rather we didn't go), le verbe qui suit est au passé, même si l’on parle du présent ou du futur :
Shall we hire a caravan? - I’d rather we rented a cottage. = Louerons-nous une caravane ? - Je préfèrerais que nous louions un cottage.
I’d rather the Sunday newspapers didn't encourage rich Londonners to visit Cornwall. = Je préfèrerais que les journaux du dimanche n'encouragent pas les riches Londoniens à visiter les Cornouailles.

Terminez les phrases 1 à 4 avec la question « would you rather I .......... », comme dans
l'exemple suivant : Are you going to phone Julia or would you rather I phoned her?

Enfin, répondez aux phrases 5 à 9 avec l'expression « l'd rather you didn't » ou « I’d
