Il n'y a pas de règles fixes régissant les emplois de to make et de to do. De façon générale, on utilise to make pour signifier que quelque chose est produit, et to do pour indiquer que l'action est une fin en soi. Les listes ci-après donnent une idée quant à certains de leurs emplois :
