Paul: I didn’t know the antique shop had dosed down.

Frances: Yes, it dosed a few months ago. Why? Are you looking for something?

Paul: I need a desk lamp, but I’d like to find something with a bit of character - perhaps a plasticky one from the 70s.

Frances: You should try eBay, you know, the auction website.

Paul: I’m wary of buying things online. How does it work?

Frances: Well, you key in what you’re looking for, and browse the photos of what’s on auction. Then you register and place a bid.

Paul: Photos can be deceptive.

Frances: True, but before you bid you can email the seller.

Paul: I think people could try to sell any old rubbish.

Frances: It’s not that easy. Previous buyers leave feedback on sales, which you can consult.

Paul: And how do you pay if you’re the highest bidder?

Frances: Through eBay’s banking service, PayPal, or by cheque. Sellers wait for the cheque to dear, though, before they’ll send you the item.

Paul: So you can get things posted to you?

Frances: Of course.

Paul: Maybe I’ll have a go. I’d like to find a vintage American car. Do people sell those?

Frances: Well, yes they do. But in that case they probably wouldn’t post it.
