How to signal a theft

Policeman: Next...

Jean: Hello, I’d like to report a theft.

Policeman: Yes... When did the incident occur?

Jean: About an hour ago. On the Tube.

Policeman: Could you explain the circumstances?

Jean: Well, I got off at Bank, and went into Starbucks for a coffee. But when I went to pay for my coffee, I realized that the pocket of my backpack was open and my wallet gone. Someone must have opened it while I was in the Tube.

Policeman: There are always lots of pickpockets on the Tube in summer. You didn’t see anyone suspicious, I suppose?

Jean: No. It was really busy. And I only arrived this morning. I’m staying with an English friend for a month, but my passport was stolen. They took my cash and credit cards too.

Policeman: You’re French, right?

Jean: Yes.

Policeman: Okay, well I’ll get on to the French Embassy, see if they can fix up an emergency passport for you. But first use this phone to cancel your credit cards. You might want to call your friends as well. I’m sure they’ll help you out. After all, that’s what friends are for...
