Comprehension

You can read the conversation of two people, Professor Emma McGill who work in a research laboratory and Andrew Whitehead, a campaigner for animal rights, talking about animal experimentation. As you read, choose the best response.

Professor McGill:

“First of all, I’d like to state categorically that for any progress we make in medical science we have to count on using animals. It is absolutely unthinkable for any major experiments to be carried out on human beings so unfortunately - and this has always been the case - we have to rely on animals. Medicine has made enormous advances based on the results of vivisection. For example, our knowledge of the nervous system is largely due to experiments on primates. It has allowed us to find cures for many illnesses. Diphtheria, smallpox and tuberculosis used to kill a great many people even quite recently but this is no longer the case. Cancer recovery rates have greatly improved thanks to the work done on animals. And I’m afraid drugs have to be tested on animals before their release on the market to check for any side effects. Nobody takes any pride in causing suffering and I can assure you it is kept to an absolute minimum. I think that those who support the use of animals to develop and test life-saving treatments have remained silent for far too long. Now all of us: politicians, charities, scientists, GPs -like myself - and everyone else who thinks that the life of a child is more important than the life of a mouse must stand up and be heard.”

Andrew Whitehead:

“I’d like to begin by saying that I’m speaking on behalf of animals, who, by definition, cannot speak for themselves. On the issue of testing drugs on animals for side effects in human beings, it's extremely difficult to predict what the effect of a drug will be on human beings from tests done on animals. They just do not tell us the whole story. It would be much more sensible to conduct trials on volunteers, students for example who receive compensation and whose health is monitored regularly. As for understanding the nervous system, I think most experts would agree that this could have been done equally well by careful observation and more. Professor McGill points to the reduction in the number of deaths from diseases like diphtheria, TB and smallpox. This is nonsense because these diseases were in decline already and they've been on the decline mainly because of improvements in hygiene and standards of living, not animal experiments. No, the whole thing is nonsense. If we look at penicillin and aspirin, two of the most widely-used modem drugs, these drugs were discovered by accident. So much for medical research! And Professor McGill's argument takes no account of the ethical dimension. The point is experiments on animals should be stopped because they are cruel and inhumane. Dogs are made to smoke cigarettes and rabbits and mice have shampoo and cosmetics squirted in their eyes to see what the effect will be. Dogs don’t smoke and rabbits don't wash their fur. Basically, experiments on animals are a form of torture and pharmaceutical companies should be made to stop.”
